Playing Tight Poker

I’m a big advocate of the tight-aggressive style of playing poker. It’s the perfect blend of saving and spending, and it’s a great style for adapting to the ups and downs of the game. With tight-aggressive playing, you can ride out the streaks of bad cards and take full monetary advantage of the good hands that you’re dealt.

Knowing when to fold your cards is a great way to keep your money during the dry spells and being selective about which hands you play is a basic part of playing conservative poker, and it is what saves your blinds for you. There’s no point in throwing your chips away on lousy cards because you got bored or you “had a feeling” about the 5-2 offsuit that you’ve just been dealt. Save your blind money on hands that have a better chance of winning you some money.

Backing out of a losing poker hand is another mark of a conservative player. Some hands look great until some community cards come out, and then they start to lose their excitement. If you’ve missed the flop and you get raised it’s okay to back out. If you get a middle pocket pair, and the flop comes out all face cards, you don’t want to call just because you’ve fallen in love with your pocket 7’s.
