Secure and Economical Truck Stops Must Be Created to End Highway Crime across the UK, Says Unite

Commenting on a research report released by Truckersworld, Len McCluskey, Assistant General Secretary, Unite, said the government must act immediately to set up secure and economical truck stops across the UK, if it wants to stop highway crime.

Truckersworld, a lobby group, stated in its report that a large number of trucks parked at unsafe truck stops were robbed last year and that this number was constantly rising. Such thefts were mainly caused due to lack of security facilities at these truck stops. Yearly losses caused by such thefts amount to about £250 million for the economy.

Unite, a union, through its Truckstops campaign has urged the government to take notice of the issue and create safer and secure truck stops in the UK. Speaking on the findings of the report, McCluskey stated that it actually reflected the real life incidents experienced by their truckers. He added that this was a growing problem and the only way to address it was the creation of safe and secure truck stops for drivers and cargo to rest at night.

He went on to say that truck driving was a very serious business and it was important that drivers felt safe on the road. McCluskey said while they were doing their best for making the roads and highways better, it was important that the government and the industry also did something towards creating safe and affordable truck stops.
